artwork reviews

San Jose Museum of Art Executive Director Dan Keegan in reference to “Trunks:” “This artist creates beautiful, sensual monotypes. Sometimes the best things are simple, elemental. The works have a haiku-like quality to them – a single gesture repeated, a movement expanded. Trunks has simplicity, repetition, and rhythm wrapped in a subtle composition that borders on the sublime.”

Triton Museum of Art Executive Director George Rivera in reference to “Wyoming:” “Subtle dreamscapes, imagery and mood conveyed are very thoughtful.”

Sunset Magazine Art Director Bill Cheney in reference to “Northwest Green:” “Exquisite in its simplicity. This would be hard to improve.”

San Jose State University Professor and prominent graphic designer Sam Smidt in reference to “Rain on Window:” “Pattern evokes subtle elegance and simplicity.”

background

For over 25 years, Laura has explored different artistic techniques including monotype printmaking, painting, encaustic (wax-based), and mixed media. She is particularly drawn to monotype printmaking as it combines the best of painting and printing techniques in a spontaneous medium that allows for deep, rich hues and tones to develop into one-of-a-kind original art pieces. Backpacking through the Eastern Sierra have exposed her to the stunning expanses of rock, mountains, and trees that often provide a basis for her interpretive landscapes. Extensive travel through Europe and Asia have also had a strong influence on her work. Since her first trip to Japan, Laura has been drawn to the simplicity and grace of the culture and it is reflected in her artwork. Laura received undergraduate and graduate degrees in art and communications, graduating magna cum laude. She is serving her second term as a Public Art Commissioner to the city of Palo Alto, providing recommendations on policy, project installations and art acquisitions to the Palo Alto City Council. She teaches private art lessons in her studio focusing on monotype printmaking and encaustic painting.
